A central Pennsylvania prosecutor has cleared prison officials of wrongdoing in the suicide of an inmate who jumped to his death in March.
District Attorney Craig Stedman told the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era on Thursday that corrections officials did nothing wrong leading up to the death of 50-year-old John Kruger on March 22.
Stedman says Kruger jumped from the second-floor railing as inmates left their cells to pick up serving trays. Guards immediately attended to him but Kruger died about five hours later.
The prosecutor says a fellow inmate had tried to stop Kruger from jumping. Warden Vincent Guarini says Kruger was being treated by prison psychiatrists.
Kruger's family intends to sue the prison.
