Newark Police Officer Fires Shot at Stolen Vehicle

Newark police say a city officer fired a shot at a stolen vehicle after the driver allegedly tried to hit the officer and a colleague.

The Star-Ledger reports the incident occurred around 3 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of South 20th Street.

The officers were responding to a report of a sick or possibly injured person inside a car. But upon arrival, they learned the car had been reported stolen.

When the car's driver saw the officers approaching the vehicle, he allegedly tried to hit the officers and then drove away.

One of the officers then fired a single shot at the vehicle, but it's not known if the bullet struck the car or anyone inside the vehicle.

The officers were not injured in the incident.
