The Easton City Council in Pennsylvania has voted 4-3 against a proposal to decriminalize the possession of a small amount of marijuana.
Councilman Peter Melan's proposal would have made possession of a small amount a civil offense punishable by a fine of up to $300. Current law describes a small amount as about an ounce, or fewer than 28 grams of marijuana.
The proposal was rejected Wednesday night shortly after city Solicitor Bill Murphy said the issue should be resolved at the state level.
The executive director of a local marijuana advocacy group asked city council to pass a resolution urging state action. The council said it would consider the resolution at their next meeting.
Other Pennsylvania cities that have pushed through decriminalization include Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, York and Erie.
