Students at a private school in Wilmington are raising money to buy body armor for a police dog.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports the Ursuline Academy's Friends of the Animals Club plans to raise money to buy the protective gear for Neo, a 20-month-old German Shepherd who is a member of the Wilmington Police's K-9 unit.
βThey put themselves in harmβs way, the same as the officers do,β the club's faculty moderator Betsy Chapin said. βThey put their lives on the line. They work diligently, very, very, very hard and are very committed to make our city a safer place.β
Chapin says students will meet next week to come up with fundraising ideas.
According to Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog, a group that buys bulletproof vests for police dogs in Massachusetts, the vests cost between $1,000 to $2,400 dollars.
