Del. Students Raising Money for K-9 Bulletproof Vest

Students at a private school in Wilmington are raising money to buy body armor for a police dog.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports the Ursuline Academy's Friends of the Animals Club plans to raise money to buy the protective gear for Neo, a 20-month-old German Shepherd who is a member of the Wilmington Police's K-9 unit.

β€œThey put themselves in harm’s way, the same as the officers do,” the club's faculty moderator Betsy Chapin said. β€œThey put their lives on the line. They work diligently, very, very, very hard and are very committed to make our city a safer place.”

Chapin says students will meet next week to come up with fundraising ideas.

According to Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog, a group that buys bulletproof vests for police dogs in Massachusetts, the vests cost between $1,000 to $2,400 dollars.
