Fast Way Criminals Can Post Bail

Allegheny County has become the fifth in the state to offer criminal court defendants an opportunity to pay their bail online using credit or debit cards.

The PAePay Bail system was first rolled out in Chester County in October 2012. Delaware, Erie and Westmoreland counties were next to go online before Allegheny, which includes Pittsburgh and its nearest suburbs.

The largest amount that can be billed to a card is $20,000, plus a $2.75 processing fee.

The system accepts payments from Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express and automatic teller machine cards.

County court administrators are hoping that by making bail more convenient that fewer defendants will have to spend time in jail or be transported to court by deputies, saving the county money.
