Philly Stepdad Gets Life, Not Death, in 3 Killings

A Philadelphia man found guilty of murdering three teens, who were feuding with his stepsons, will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Axel Barreto was convicted of first-degree murder last week in the January 2012 deaths of 14-year-old Joshua Soto, 14-year-old Dante Lugo and 16-year-old Javier Orlandi outside his Northeast Philadelphia home.

The same jury on Thursday sentenced Barreto -- choosing between life or the death penalty.

Prosecutors said he opened fire on a car crowded with teens following months of hostility between them and the group that included Barreto's stepsons.

Barreto apologized to the families of the victims Tuesday, saying “I never meant for this to happen.”

His 10-year-old stepdaughter pleaded with jurors "Please don't make him die. He's always been there for everybody."
