Pa. Trooper Struck by Drunken Driver: Cops

The driver involved in the crash was arrested and charged with DUI.

A Pennsylvania State Trooper was seriously injured Thursday when a drunken driver hit his patrol car, police say.

The accident happened at about 2 p.m. on U.S. Route 1 between Route 82 and Kennett Square, authorities say.

Police say Chad Burgwald, 24, was in his vehicle monitoring traffic. Suddenly investigators say he was struck by a car driven by Heather Delong, 47, of Glen Mills.

Burgwald had to be extricated by fire crews and then airlifted to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center. He is currently in serious condition.

Delong was not injured in the accident. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and aggravated assault. She was arraigned before district court on $200,000 bail. She is currently in the Chester County Prison.

The U.S. Route 1 bypass was closed both north and southbound between Route 82 and Route 41. It reopened around 7 p.m.
