Millville Man Killed at NJ Raceway

Sources say the drag car's parachute didn't deploy

New Jersey State Police are investigating the cause of a crash that killed a Millville racecar driver.

Neal Parker, 58, was killed during NHRA SuperNationals when his drag car ran off the track at Raceway Park in Old Bridge Township, N.J., officials say. Witnesses say the car's parachute didn't deploy.

"He definitely had a good launch. He had the lede the whole way, just when he got to the end the parachute didn't go off," witness Bruce Polowitzer said.

Parker's car traveled off the track, through a gravel trap, a series of catch nets and yellow DOT barrier barrels, officials say. The Millville, N.J. man raced with the Top Alcohol Funny Car team.

Officials say the drag racing cars travel between 250 and 300-miles-per-hour on the track.

Racing was stopped for some time as raceway officials worked to repair the track.
