Hundreds Mourn Philly Soul Legend

A private family funeral for legendary R&B singer-songwriter Teddy Pendergrass was held Saturday morning with a public funeral immediately following.

The funerals at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church was followed with a private burial at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd.

Music VIPs and other dignitaries were expected at the funeral. Fans lined up by the hundreds for Friday's public viewing.

Pendergrass died Jan. 13 at age 59 after battling colon cancer. He'd spent the last 28 years of his life in a wheelchair after a car crash paralyzed him from the waist down.

Pendergrass helped define the Philly Soul sound in the '70s, first with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes on hits like "I Miss You," "Bad Luck," "Wake Up Everybody" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now."

Later in the decade, Pendergrass started a solo career. He recorded hits like "Turn Off the Lights," "I Don't Love You Anymore," "Love T.K.O." and "Close the Door."
