Philabundance Food Center to Open in Chester

The $4.5 million dollar project is modeled as a non-profit grocery store

There has not been a grocery store within city limits of Chester for more than 10 years, but that will soon change.

On Friday afternoon, Philabundance will announce their plans to open up a Community Food Center on 9th Street in Chester.

The $4.5 million dollar project is a unique approach to improving food access and equality in the area, according to Philabundance.

In Chester, nearly 54% of residents live too far from a grocery store that provides healthy and nutritious foods, according to a Community Food Security survey done by Philabundance.

The 21,000 square foot space will be a non-profit grocery store, giving access to food items at a low or no cost.

The center will offer fruits and vegetables, and other healthy food options, according to Philabundance.

The food center will accept SNAP benefits from low-income families. SNAP is the new name for the Food Stamp program.

About 20% of items will be donated and free to customers, according to the Philabundance website.

The center will be open five days a week to start off, and may move to seven days depending on need.
