Tractor Wheel Crushes, Kills Young Boy

Authorities say a 5-year-old boy has died after a tractor wheel fell on him while he was playing in a barn on his family's central Pennsylvania farm.

The accident happened Thursday evening in Washington Township, Pa. York County Deputy Coroner Steve Cosey says Jacob Nell was playing when the wheel fell over and pinned him on the ground. The wheel was not attached to a tractor.

The boy was taken to York Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m. Cosey says the cause of death is blunt force chest trauma.

Farm accidents do happen to children -- many times to kids working on farms unlike the child who in this case was playing.

On average, around 113 people under the age of 20 die each year from farm-related injuries, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Another 16,100 youths were hurt on farms in just 2009 alone, according to NIOSH.
