3 Escape When House Explodes, Burns in NW Pennsylvania

Three people — including one taking a shower — escaped injury when their house exploded and caught fire in northwestern Pennsylvania.

McKean Hose Co. Chief Jim Pyle tells the Erie Times-News the home in McKean Township was engulfed in flames when crews arrived just before 6 a.m. Thursday.

The chief says one family member in the home was showering and two others were sleeping when the explosion rocked the three-story home. The fire completed the job of leveling the home.

A state police fire marshal was coming in to investigate the cause of the explosion and fire.

Crews battled cold temperatures and had to run thousands of feet of hose to carry water to the home that sits off a rural road, down a long driveway.

The township is about 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
