2 Feet of Water Floods Homes When Water Main Breaks in Fox Chase

A rush of brown water flooded homes in Philadelphia's Fox Chase neighborhood Monday evening when a water main burst.

Water started gushing down the 800 block of Hartel Avenue between 5 and 6 p.m., neighbors tell NBC10.

Some homeowners said they had two feet of standing water in their houses. The break also caused the street to buckle.

Iva Riepen had a garage filled with family photos and keepsakes she and her husband collected over the years. Now, they're likely destroyed.

"A lot of pictures are floating around down there," she said. "A lot of things that meant a lot to us were in there."

Firefighters were dispatched to try and turn off the flow as the Philadelphia Water Department was called. The department is investigating.
