Glaxo buys Fla. company for $2.9 billion

LONDON - British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline P.L.C., which has major operations in Philadelphia, today said it will pay $2.9 billion to buy American dermatology business Stiefel Laboratories Inc. - only the latest deal in a flurry of mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceuticals industry.
