Urban Outfitters Plans $30M Fulfillment Center in Central Pa.

Officials in a central Pennsylvania county are lauding Urban Outfitters for its decision to build a 836,000-square-foot fulfillment center, with some experts painting the retailer's $30 million investment as a watershed moment for economic development in the state's Indiana County.

Located between Altoona and Pittsburgh, White Township of Indiana County will gain 225 permanent jobs once the Philadelphia-based retailer's center is operational, an employment gain that the Indiana Gazette said will represent “the most jobs created by a single employer in Indiana County in more than five decades."

Requests for comment from the company, which is based in the Navy Yard, and the Indiana County Development Corp. were not immediately returned.

Besides the permanent positions, as many as 600 other temporary construction jobs are expected to be created thanks to Urban Outfitters' commitment to build its fulfillment center at the Windy Ridge Business and Technology Park, located near the intersection of U.S. Route 119 and Luciusboro Road.

The number of jobs are a boost to the local economy alone, but Urban Outfitters' arrival in White could mean even more for the township and the surrounding region.
