Philly Folk Fest Turns 50

The longest continuously-running festival in North America will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

The Philadelphia Folk Festival kicks off on Aug.18 and lasts until Aug. 21, at the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township.

The festival announced several musical acts that will perform this year including Arlo Guthrie, The Kennedys, Angel Band, The Great Groove Band, The David Wax Museum, Trombone Shorty and more.

“We really want to honor our musical lineage and highlight not only the heritage artists, but also the new traditionalists who will help to teach future generations to love folk music,” said Lisa Schwartz, President of the Philadelphia Folksong Society.

Artistic Director Richard Kardon says he plans on focusing on artist collaborations this year.

DJ Gene Shay from WXPN-FM will host the festival for the 50th time. Shay is known for being the “Godfather of Philadelphia Folk Music.”

Folk music lovers can bring their families as the festival offers attractions for younger guests. Kids can enjoy puppeteers, jugglers, hands-on crafts and more. Children 11 years and younger can attend the festival for free.
