U.S. Women's Eight Rowing Dominates in 1st Rio Olympics Test

U.S. Men's Eight comes up just short, will row again for shot in final

The U.S. Women's Eight entered the Rio Olympics rowing competition in dominating style, winning its heat several boat lengths ahead of the Netherlands.

The back-to-back Olympic champions won the race Monday in 6 minutes, 6.34 seconds, a whooping eight seconds ahead of the Dutch boat. Romania was third in 6:16.24.

The U.S., which trains in Princeton, New Jersey, has won 10 consecutive world and Olympic titles in the women's eight since 2006, a dynasty that is unmatched in most team sports. [[389473822, C]]

The rowing competition resumed in calm and overcast conditions after races were canceled Sunday due to strong winds.

The U.S. Men's Eight doesn't have the same history of dominance and finished off the medal stand in London. The boat with New Jersey coxswain Sam Ojserikis, Philadelphia's Glenn Ochal and South Jersey's Steve Kasprzyk on board placed second in their heat with a time of 5 minutes, 40.16 seconds -- just two seconds behind Germany.

The men will row for a spot in the medal final Wednesday morning.

Both eight finals are set for Saturday morning.
