How do you replace a former bench coach who was a former major league manager? Find a former major league manager if you're the Phillies.

The Phillies have named for Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates manager Pete Mackanin as their new bench coach.

Mackanin replaces Jimy Williams who was not retained by the Phillies after the 2008 World Series season.

Mackanin's hiring allows Sam Perlozzo to move to third base coach on Charlie Manuel's staff.

In 106 games as a manager Mackanin posted an even .500 record.
