Delaware Teacher Faces Charges She Assaulted Boy, 6, With Autism

A teacher who works with students with special needs in Delaware is accused of assaulting a 6-year-old student earlier this month.

Delaware State Police said detectives were contacted on Oct. 19 by administrators from the Delaware Autism Program, who informed them that a 6-year-old boy with autism had been assaulted by his teacher at Etta J. Wilson Elementary School on Oct. 16. Police said an investigation into the matter revealed that Anne Gullo, 52, of Newark "had pushed the male student who then fell into a bookshelf."

The student suffered a minor injury to his back, according to police. On Tuesday, Gullo was charged with second-degree child abuse and surrendered to Delaware State Police detectives, police said. She was arraigned at New Castle County Court and released on $500 unsecured bail.

Police said that due to the incident's sensitive nature, specific details of what occurred are not being released. They deferred questions about Gullo's employment status with the program to the Christina School District.
