Jury Selection Begins in Case of Pennsylvania Husband Accused of Killing Wife in 2005

Jury selection begins this week in central Pennsylvania for the eastern Pennsylvania trial of a man charged in the shooting death of his estranged wife almost a decade ago.

A Berks County judge ruled last fall that jurors for the trial of 43-year-old Miguel Torres would be chosen from another county due to extensive publicity.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin Tuesday in York County with opening statements slated for Jan. 26 in Berks County. The Reading Eagle reports that jurors are to be bused to Reading from York daily for the trial.

Prosecutors allege that Torres ambushed 32-year-old Barbara West-Torres in a Reading parking lot in September 2005. He was arrested in March 2013 in Italy and extradited after prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.
