Volunteers and nonprofit groups are planning to turn several vacant lots in Camden into a garden.
The ground will be prepared Friday and planted over the weekend, making it the 100th community garden in a city known for crime and poverty rates that are among the highest in the nation.
The latest garden is going on five city-owned abandoned lots. They've been adopted by the Camden City Garden Club and the local nonprofit group Hopeworks.
Besides making a city full of abandoned homes and vacant lots a little prettier, the gardens bring fresh vegetables to a city with only one supermarket.
