Driver Loses Control, Truck Goes Into Bay on Parkway

A dump truck lost control and plunged into the Great Egg Harbor Bay Friday afternoon as drivers tried to make their way down the shore for the holiday weekend.

New Jersey State Police say the driver was on the Garden State Parkway in Upper Township when he lost control of his vehicle, hit a metal divider and went into the bay.

Lucky for the driver, two construction workers at a job nearby, saw the accident happen and were able to jump into the water and save the man.

It hit the water and then landed on its side with the driver's side cab door up," said one of the men, Aaron Grace. "So J and I jumped in."

"We could see the guy in the window, scratching to get out," said Jason (J.) Armbruster. "I had a hammer and I smashed the window, and somehow he [Aaron Grace] got the door off with the crane.

They were able to pull the victim out of the bay and he was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

His condition is unknown at this time.

A crew of divers were brought in to search the water for anyone else that may have been in the truck along with the driver, although police say they believe the driver was alone.

The southbound side of the parkway was shut down for a short time, backing up traffic as drivers tried to make their way to the shore for Memorial Day weekend.
