Rowan University Police 1st to Wear Body Cams in New Jersey

Rowan University has become the first New Jersey college where police are wearing body cameras.

The public university in the southern New Jersey community of Glassboro has equipped 34 officers with the recording devices. They started wearing them Monday.

Some activists have been calling for police body cameras as a way to monitor abuse by police officers. They are also intended to protect officers from unsubstantiated claims of brutality.

Rowan officials say they are using them because of a state law last year that required cameras on police vehicle dashboards or on officers.

Several cities and towns across the state are also using the cameras.
