PAFA to Digitize Historic Photograph Collection

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts will be bringing at least 2,000 historic photographs, some from as early as the 1870s, into the 21st century thanks to a new digital initiative.

PAFA announced Monday it has received a $25,000 grant that will launch a one-year project to digitize, catalog, re-house and provide online access to the institution's annual exhibition photograph collection.

PAFA's annual exhibitions — held from 1811 until 1969 — represented more than 100,000 works of art coming to Philadelphia during that timeframe.

The PAFA archives include photographs that document original works exhibited and installation photographs from as early as 1877. At least 2,000 photographs from the annual exhibitions collection will be digitized.
