Motorcyclist Dies in Crash

A motorcyclist died after crashing along a Delaware roadway this morning.

Investigators say Richard Correll Jr., 58, of Newark, Delaware, was riding a 2006 Harley-Davidson Road King on Capitol Trail (State Route 2) in the right lane at 5:16 a.m. At the same time, police say a 2002 Ford Escape was exiting a driveway and entering the eastbound lanes of Capitol Trail.

Police say a preliminary investigation suggests Correll fell off his motorcycle after applying his brake and laying the vehicle on its side. After falling on the roadway, police say Correll was struck by a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and another vehicle.

Correll was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Escape and the driver of the Cherokee were not injured and remained at the scene. Police say the second driver who struck Correll fled the scene however.

Capitol Trail was closed in both directions for about two and a half hours while Troopers investigated and cleared the crash. No charges have been filed. Police continue to look for the second vehicle that struck Correll.

If you have any information on that vehicle's whereabouts, please call 302-834-2620, extension 287.

This was the second deadly motorcycle crash in Delaware in a matter of days. Early Saturday morning Robert Butler of Mitlon, Del. crashed into a concrete barrier during a crash along Indian River Inlet Bridge in Bethany Beach. State police announced Tuesday that Butler died from his injuries.
