Delaware state police are investigating an early-morning motorcycle crash in Bethany Beach that left a man seriously injured.

Police say it happened early Saturday morning on the Indian River Inlet Bridge, when the operator of a speeding Kawasaki motorcycle struck the rear of a Chevrolet van and then hit a concrete barrier.

The motorcycle operator, identified as 27-year-old Robert E. Butler of Milton, was thrown from the motorcycle and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say the van driver wasn't injured and was able to stop his vehicle.

The bridge is located on Coastal Highway. The northbound area around the crash was closed for hours as the crash was investigated.
