Man Killed, Wife in Critical in Alleged DUI Crash

A man was killed and his wife is in critical condition after they were allegedly hit by a drunk driver near Dewey Beach during the Fourth of July holiday.

Delaware State Police say the incident happened around 9:34 p.m., after a fireworks show.

Police say Matthew O'Connor, driving a 2005 Lincoln Aviator southbound on Route 1, was preparing to turn into a turn lane near Anchor Way. Roy Love, 79, and his wife, Helene, 75, were crossing the median to the west side of Route 1 southbound when they stepped out into the left lane and were hit by O’Connor’s car.

The couple was taken to Beebe Medical Center where Roy was pronounced dead. Helene Love was  airlifted to Christiana Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

O'Connor, 25, was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and released.  More charges may be forthcoming upon completion of the investigation, according to police.
