Main Line Hospital Gets Largest Gift Ever

Riddle Hospital is receiving a $16 million gift, which the Delaware County medical center said is the largest donation ever received in its 53-year history.

The gift is from the trust created in the will of John Bancker Gribbel, who died in 1947. Gribbel and his family were patients of the former “Media Hospital,” Riddle’s predecessor, and of Dr. Charles H. Schoff, who founded that hospital in 1909.

Another patient of Schoff’s was Samuel D. Riddle, who died in 1951. Samuel Riddle stipulated that part of his estate be used to build a “bigger and better hospital” for Media and its surrounding communities, leading to the opening of Riddle Hospital in 1963.

Riddle Hospital, part of Main Line Health, plans to use the income from the endowment to support patient care at the medical center.
