Police: Hidden and untreated wounds led to girl's death

Charleeni Ferreria, 10, was the victim of physical and sexual abuse for years, police said. Now, her parents are charged with her death.
The death of a 10-year old Feltonville girl has uncovered years of physical and sexual abuse.
Charlenni Ferreria, who was physically handicapped, was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children Wednesday after she was found unconscious in her C Street home, police said. The girl's lungs had collapsed after an infection related to broken ribs was left untreated.
Soon after Charlenni's death, doctors discovered signs of long-term abuse including severe head trauma, a broken hipbone and vaginal and anal scaring.
"It's unconscionable to think that someone could do this to a sweet, little 10-year old girl," Philadelphia Police Capt. James Clark said of the case.
One wound -- a seven-inch long gash on her head -- was hidden by a hair weave, police said.
Charlenni's father Domingo, 53, and her stepmother Margarita Garabito, 43, were charged with her death Thursday. Charges include Murder, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and related offenses. Investigators would not say what role they believe the pair played in the abuse.
"We didn't know…it's too late the baby is gone," said neighbor Angie McClain. She and other community members stood in vigil for the girl Thursday night.
Candles, flowers and stuffed animals sat in front of Charleeni's home as a stark reminder of the girl's short and tortured life.
Investigators are talking to teachers and administrators at the girl's school. Officials at Feltonville Intermediate School said they were shocked to learn of the allegations of abuse.
"How did this girl have all these bruises on her and was still going to school and the teachers didn't notice," McClain said.
Despite the abuse and her physical limitations, Charlenni was able to maintain perfect attendance at the school.
In a statement released Thursday, the Department of Human Services says they are also investigating Charleeni's death:
"Unfortunately state confidentiality laws prohibit us from disclosing any case related information to the public. However, as the facts of this case become known to DHS, we will have lots of work to do in looking at the recent events that could have led to or have prevented this tragedy. DHS is fully cooperating with police and the district attorney's office as they investigate this case."
