Police say they began to investigate Donovan Garvin, 37, a teacher at Smyrna High School, after someone found a cellphone containing communication between him and a 15-year-old student.

The relationship between the two allegedly began during the last school year. Police say the girl is a sophomore and was once one of Garvin’s students.

Garvin, who lives in Smyrna, was arrested on Monday. He is charged with sexual abuse of a child and other related offenses. He was committed to the Vaughn Correctional Center after failing to post $780,000 secured bail. The Smyrna School District also placed him on leave. He is currently not allowed to have contact with any students.
