Eagles Trade DeMarco Murray to Titans

The purge continues.

A few hours after the Eagles pulled off a trade to send Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso to the Dolphins (see story), they finished a trade to ship running back DeMarco Murray to the Titans.

Murray's agency, SportsTrust Advisors
, tweeted that a trade and new contract had been orchestrated.

So, within a few hours, the Eagles have undone some of the biggest moves of the Chip Kelly era as general manager in Philadelphia. Kelly, who was fired on Dec. 29, won a power struggle over Howie Roseman last offseason. With Roseman back in charge this offseason, he hasn't wasted any time erasing what Kelly did to the organization.

None of the trades can be official until Wednesday after 4 p.m., when the new league year begins.

While it's unclear what compensation the Eagles will get in return for any of the moves, they will save considerable salary cap room and have unburdened themselves of tough contracts by making these two moves. [[371370141, C]]

By trading Murray, the Eagles will save $4 million in cap room, but Murray will still count as $4 million against their cap this season. The team will save $4.9 million in cap room by trading Maxwell.

Restructuring his deal seems like a big key in the Murray deal. He had a fully guaranteed base salary of $7 million in 2016 and many thought he had a contract that was simply untradable.

Murray, 28, finished 2015 as the Eagles' leading rusher, but had just 702 yards (3.6 yards per carry) after leading the league in rushing with the Cowboys in 2014. He came to Philadelphia last offseason on a five-year deal worth $40 million ($21 million guaranteed).

While Murray publicly said all the right things in 2015, it was clear he wasn't happy about the situation he found himself in. He came to the Eagles to be the featured running back, but struggled and eventually lost his starting job. Stories of his unhappiness — even one in which he voiced his frustration to owner Jeff Lurie on the team plane — surfaced throughout the year.

Last week, at the press conference to announce Sam Bradford's new deal, head coach Doug Pederson said he hadn't spoken to Murray and couldn't say whether or not he was happy in Philly.
