Victim's Cellphone Leads to Arrest of Center City Carjackers: Philadelphia Police

Philadelphia Police took two men into custody after they allegedly carjacked a woman at a Center City parking garage and forced her into a gas station convenience store.

The 28-year-old woman was in a parking garage on the 700 block of Delancey Street around 6 a.m. Wednesday when she was approached by the two armed suspects, police said. The men forced the woman, who police say is a doctor, into her Blue Honda Fit and they drove to an Exxon at York and Aramingo avenues.

Surveillance video captured one of the suspects walk into the gas station convenience store with the woman. Police say they were unable to withdraw money from the ATM. The suspect then walked to the counter and told the woman to buy cigarettes, according to investigators.

β€œThis girl [was] already nervous,” said Manveer Kumer, an employee at the store.

Kumer told NBC10 he noticed the woman was trying to signal that something was wrong as the suspect claimed they were a couple. The suspect then asked for three packs of cigarettes but Kumer told him he could only buy one with a credit card, police said. The suspect then left the woman at the gas station and drove off in her vehicle, according to investigators.

Police said they were able to track the woman’s cell phone which led them to the two suspects. The men were then arrested at A Street and Allegheny Avenue.

Police named Nathaniel Rodriguez of Church Street as one of the suspects. The 40-year-old faces numerous charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and a weapons counts. A judge set bail at $1 million, according to court records.

Police have yet to identify Rodriguez's alleged accomplice.
