Camden Loses Out on Anticipated $30 Million Grant

Camden officials have learned that the city was denied a $30 million grant less than two months after the mayor and a U.S. senator visited a neighborhood to talk about how the infusion of federal money would pay for new homes, schools and improve parks.

The city was one of nine finalists for the money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. But it lost out to Atlanta; Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee; and Sacramento, California, when the final awards were made last month.

Mayor Dana Redd and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez toured Mount Ephraim Avenue in August to talk about the city's plans for the money.

City spokesman Vincent Basara told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the city will reapply next year.
