60 Songbirds Found Dead on Delaware Boardwalk

Windows are to blame for the death of migrating birds.

As birds begin to fly south for the winter, bird casualties are increasing. In fact, about 60 birds were found dead in Rehoboth Beach, reports Delawareonline.com.

Environmental officials say Friday’s cold weather was the ideal circumstances for bird migration, which accounted for the large number of deaths among the birds, according to the Website.

But what is it, exactly, that’s killing the birds?

Anthony Gonzon, a wildlife biologist, told Delawareonline.com that it’s windows, more specifically, the large store windows on the beach town’s boardwalk. He says that birds mistake reflections for life and fly right into the windows.

Gonzon found 60 dead birds on the boardwalk in the last few weeks.

According to the online publication, window fatalities are quite common. The Bird Conservation Network (BCN) claims that at least 100 million birds are killed across North America from window collisions

The BCN suggests keeping windows dirty in the winter to help diminish reflection.
