3 Arrested in Wilmington Slaying

All three fled on foot after the crash but were later arrested

Wilmington police say three homicide suspects were arrested after their vehicle crashed into a police car while driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

Police say the shooting occurred around 1:50 a.m. Saturday. Officers patrolling in the area of Eighth and Monroe streets heard gunfire and found 28-year-old Ricky English a block away. He suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene.

Police say while the officers responded, their cruiser was struck by a car and all three suspects fled on foot. One of them threw a handgun onto the roof of a house. All three were arrested and the gun was recovered. Police have yet to identify the suspects.

English was the 19th homicide victim in Wilmington this year. There were 18 slayings all of last year. Wilmington's worst year for homicide was 2008, when 26 people were slain.
