Jefferson, Abington Health Exploring ‘Unique' Partnership

Abington Health and Jefferson Health System are exploring a strategic partnership. Abington Health Board of Trustee's has approved an "exclusive period of focused, intensive study" with the organization.

"Over the next 30 days, in conjunction with our key physician leaders and our executive team, we will be evaluating a unique model with one of the potential partners, Jefferson," said Laurence M. Merlis, president and CEO of Abington Health in a statement. The organization said it would not comment further.

It hasn't been an easy road for the Montgomery County health system. In June, Abington Health announced plans to lay off 95 workers as it struggles to cope with declining inpatient-care volumes and decreasing reimbursement rates from health insurers. It also reduced hours for other employees.
