If your finger is the only thing you know how to cut with a chef's knife, this is the class for you. Foster's Homeware, Old City's answer to Williams-Sonoma, offers a two-hour basic knife skills class that will have you slicing and dicing like a pro. Or at least make you less of a danger to yourself and those around you.
The Hands-On Knife Skills workshop, taught by cooking instructor Betty Kaplan, costs $39 and is offered once a month; the next one is this Saturday, May 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There are only eight people in each class and students must pre-register and pre-pay.
In the two hours, students learn how to hold and care for a knife, then move on to actually learning how to slice and dice properly with one before hitting the big time: cutting up a whole chicken.
