Philadelphia Union Get Kicks at PPL Park

The corporate-named parks of Citizen’s Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field and the Wachovia Center are getting some company. The Philadelphia Union has a name for its yet-to-be-completed home -- PPL Park.

The PPL Corporation agreed to a $20 million, 11-year-deal to sponsor the state of the art Chester soccer stadium.

But this deal is about more than just money, according to the Union.

PPL EnergyPlus will exclusively provide energy for the stadium.

"PPL Park will be the first stadium in Major League Soccer to be a hundred percent sustainable hydro and wind power energy," said Union CEO and Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz Wednesday.

The Union also announced that one hundred percent of energy used in the stadium would be from sources throughout Pennsylvania.

Along with providing green energy to the stadium, PPL has also found a way to market its name.

"In tough economic times, we found the perfect marketing partner," Sakiewicz added.

The stadium, located right on the Chester waterfront, should hold 18,500 for soccer and up to 26,000 for concerts, according to the team.

Some of the other cool features that should be included at PPL Park include a concert stage, large promenades for tailgating and outdoor music and side line roofs to protect fans from sun and rain.

PPL Park officially opens on June 27, when the Union takes on the Seattle Sounders, which will air on ESPN2.
