The Brooklyn siblings who told police they were stalked by a man who left a note saying "Watch out. I am watching you!!" in their mailbox have recanted their claims, according to the NYPD.
It comes hours after a 58-year-old man turned himself into police in the case. A law enforcement source said that he told authorities he "just wanted to clear things up" and had been cooperating with police.
Police launched a search for an alleged stalker after the 8-year-old told police she noticed a bald stalker following her on her way to a bus stop in Crown Heights on Friday. The siblings said her brother tried to flag down his bus that afternoon, trying to pick him up. The girl then claimed she saw a stalker took pictures of the inside of the house; they both claimed the man asked where they slept.
The case drew attention of higher-ups at the NYPD; Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said the case evoked "an eerie feeling."
It's not clear if any charges will be filed in the case, or what caused the siblings to recant their stories.
