Three Crashes Snarl Traffic on Roosevelt Boulevard, Send Several to Hospital

Three crashes within an hour of each other sent 11 people including two children to the hospital and jammed traffic on the Roosevelt Expressway in Philadelphia early Sunday morning.

In the first crash, a car overturned in the northbound lanes just south of the Broad Street exit by the border of Nicetown and Hunting Park about 2 a.m., NBC10's Drew Smith reported from the scene. Seven people were in that car at the time of the crash, and two people, including a man and an 11-year-old boy, were ejected from the vehicle. Both the man and the boy were in critical condition Sunday morning.

Police said a 4-year-old girl is also among the injured.

Not long after, there was a second crash on the same stretch of the expressway, according to authorities, and within about an hour, a third crash, this time about a mile south, near Wissahickon Avenue. Police said four people -- two from each crash -- were taken to the hospital.

All three crashes happened in the northbound lanes, which were completely shut down for about five hours, from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m., as police worked to clear the debris.

The cause of the crashes is under investigation.
