Teen Shot in Chest During Robbery Attempt at Philadelphia Playground

A gunman shot a teenager during a robbery attempt at a Philadelphia playground Sunday night.

The unidentified teenager remained hospitalized in critical condition after being shot at the Torresdale Playground at 9550 Frankford Avenue in the Torresdale section of Northeast Philadelphia.

According to Philadelphia Police, the 18-year-old boy was with his friends shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday when an unidentified gunman came out of a wooded area and announced a robbery.

Investigators say the gunman then opened fire after a brief confrontation with the 18-year-old. The teen victim was struck once in the chest and the gunman fled the scene -- it wasn't clear if anything was taken.

The teen was taken to Aria Torresdale Hospital where he remained cortical Monday morning.

Police didn't make any immediate arrests and didn't immediately release a description of the gunman.
