Sheriff Disarms Teen with Gun on Subway

The off-duty Deputy Sheriff was tipped off from a subway rider who saw the teen with a gun

A rider on the Broad Street Subway tipped off a Philadelphia Deputy Sheriff that he spotted a teen with a gun riding the subway on Friday afternoon.

The off-duty Deputy Sheriff, Antonio Tabita of South Philadelphia, was in uniform after getting off work from courtroom security at the Criminal Justice Center.

“I didn’t believe him at first,” said Tabita in a release issued by the Sheriff's Office, “but he kept whispering that he saw him (the youth) taking his hand in and out of his pocket and saw the gun several times."

Authorities say the 16-year-old left the subway with another teen and Tabita followed them. That's when the 11-year veteran saw a handgun in the teen's front pocket.

“That’s when I laid my hand on my weapon and told them to stop and yelled at one of them to lay down on the ground with his hands over his head while I cuffed the other one with my one set of cuffs," Tabitha said in the release.

Both teens were taken into custody.
