Officials are searching for a missing swimmer after rescuing two others in Wildwood, New Jersey.

The NJ State Police Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard were called to a beach off East Andrews Avenue Tuesday afternoon for a report of missing swimmers.

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard told NBC10 they were able to rescue two people while a third person swam to safety before rescuers arrived. A fourth man remained missing in the water however.

Officials said the men were about 200 yards from the shoreline.

The Wildwood Fire Department suspended their search around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Coast Guard and NJ State Police searched until 8 p.m. Tuesday. They will resume the search Wednesday morning.

No lifeguards are available on the beach during the week, according to Wildwood Fire Department Chief Ernie Troiano III. Troiano warned people to never swim in the water if no lifeguards are available. He also advised anyone caught in a rip current to swim parallel to the ocean, not towards the shore.

"Whether you're a good swimmer or not, if the beach is not guarded, do not go into the ocean," Troiano said. "You want to get your feet wet? You want to go maybe up to your knees? That's it."
