Woman Says Philly Police Looking for Her Son Wrongly Pulled Her Out of Home and Detained Her Overnight

A Philadelphia woman says she was wrongly pulled out of her home by two city detectives and detained overnight after officers came looking for her son.

Nicol Newman describes the March 9 incident as "demeaning and disrespectful." Her lawyer, Michael Coard, told The Philadelphia Inquirer on Wednesday that police wanted to arrest her son for theft, but that he wasn't home.

Coard says Newman didn't let the detectives inside because they lacked a search warrant.

The 48-year-old Newman was charged with disorderly conduct. She's due in court Thursday, and her lawyer says she will ask for a trial.

Police say they are looking into her complaint.

The Philadelphia NAACP will rally Saturday in her support. Newman is African-American, and the detectives who took her in are white.
