Philadelphia Has New Chance to Build 2nd Casino

Mayor Nutter praises the decision to move forward on another Philly casino

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says the state gaming board made the right decision in deciding to start accepting applications for the remaining casino license in the city.

The Gaming Control Board opted Wednesday to move forward with a second casino in Philadelphia, rather than wait longer for the Legislature to decide whether to open up the bidding statewide.

Nutter says the existing Philadelphia casino, SugarHouse Casino, helped generate more than $6 million for the city and the school district last year. He says he looks forward to working with the applicants for the second license, which he says will benefit the city.

Eleven casinos are up and running in Pennsylvania, which legalized casino gambling in 2004.

Applications will be open until Nov. 15.
