Man Convicted of 2nd-Degree Murder in Killing Over Dre Beats Headphones

A man convicted in a west Philadelphia slaying that police said was over expensive "Beats by Dre" headphones had his sentencing delayed following a courtroom brawl.

Jurors deliberated for about six hours over two days before convicting 21-year-old Arkel Garcia on Tuesday in the November 2013 shooting death of 21-year-old Christian Massey. Prosecutors said Garcia told detectives that he and others only planned to rob Massey.

Defense attorney Joshua Scarpello said his client was exhausted after 24 hours in custody, but authorities said he never asked for an attorney or a phone call.

As Garcia stood to have the mandatory life term imposed Tuesday, his chair tipped over and a confrontation with a deputy sheriff began. Garcia was then subdued by deputies and a police officer, and sentencing was postponed until March 5.
