Man Dies After Being Struck by Wave in Ocean Off Jersey Shore Beach

The man was at the Fremont Avenue beach with his wife and 5-year-old son Saturday.

A New Jersey man died after he was struck by a wave while swimming in the ocean off a beach in Seaside Heights, Ocean County, Saturday.

The 44-year-old New Brunswick man was visiting the beach at Fremont Avenue with his wife and young son. While the man was in the water, he was struck by a wave, a witness said.

Police officers were called to the beach around 7:15 p.m. When they arrived they found the man face down in the water about 30 yards out from the shoreline.

Three officers entered the water and observed a strong rip current. Rescue units found the man and removed him. Medics then performed CPR but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have not yet released the man's identity.

Police Chief Tommy Boyd told the Asbury Park Press that the wave may have broken the man's neck and left him incapacitated. Officials said lifeguards weren't on duty at the time.
