A former Atlantic City Police officer was pulled over early Sunday morning for allegedly speeding. When he identified himself as a police officer, he was arrested on charges of impersonating a police officer, police say.
Former Atlantic City Police officer James Fitzgerald was ordered to get out of his vehicle after the officer who pulled him over told him he was being arrested for impersonating a police officer. Fitzgerald, of Caspian Avenue in Atlantic City, then struggled with the arresting officer while he was being placed into custody, according to Atlantic City Police.
In addition to allegedly speeding and impersonating an officer, 31-year-old Fitzgerald was also driving with a suspended license, police say.
Fitzgerald -- who was fired from the force in 2010 and not rehired -- was arrested on charges of impersonating a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, police say.
Fitzgeraldβs passenger, 42-year-old Eric Gibson of Atlantic City was arrested on an outstanding warrant, police say.
Gibson is charged with contempt of court.
