Whether it's because of his slump, the matchup with a lefty starting pitcher or both, J.P. Crawford is out of the Phillies' lineup Monday.
Scott Kingery bats sixth and starts at shortstop against Reds left-hander Cody Reed.
Crawford is 1 for 23 on the season with one walk and eight strikeouts. It's far too early for the Phillies to make a definitive decision with his role or playing time, but in the here and now, Kingery is the bigger offensive threat.
Kingery is not a shortstop by trade. Just two of his 303 minor-league starts came at the position, but this is already his third start at short for the Phillies this season.
