Closing Arguments Scheduled in Trooper's Trial

Closing arguments are scheduled Monday in federal court in Philadelphia in the trial of a state trooper accused of having assaulted a suspect almost five years ago.

Forty-four-year-old Kelley Cruz of Oxford, a narcotics investigator, is charged with having violated the civil rights of a man during an August 2009 arrest in Exton, Chester County.

Prosecutors allege that Cruz stomped on a 22-year-old man's head as the man lay face down and handcuffed on his kitchen floor.

The Daily Local News of West Chester reports that Cruz testified Friday that the suspect was cursing and threatening him and tried to rise, so he pushed the man's shoulder to the floor.

West Whiteland officer Glenn Cockerham testified that he hadn't seen anything that would warrant Cruz's use of force.
